The Terminal: Guwahati’s New 24×7 Food Destination Set to Boost Tourism, Entrepreneurship and Employment
Guwahati is set to add a new dimension to its vibrant food and hospitality sector with the inauguration of The Terminal, the city’s first round-the-clock food court. Formally inaugurated on Friday evening by Shri Chetan Kumar Srivastava, General Manager, Northeast Frontier Railway, the new dining destination is located near Guwahati Railway Station, at Panbazar, Station Road. It will open to the public on 1 November 2026, offering a diverse culinary experience 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Bringing together around 40 food and retail outlets, The Terminal is designed to serve a wide range of tastes under one roof. From authentic Assamese and North-Eastern delicacies to North Indian, Chinese and Continental cuisines, cafés and desserts, the food court aims to provide a convenient dining destination for residents, railway passengers, tourists and families. Popular brands such as KFC, Domino’s, Subway, Costa Coffee, Baskin Robbins, Wow! Momo and Belgian Waffles will add to its diverse offerings.
Celebrating North-Eastern Cuisine and Culture
The ethnic cuisine of Assam and the wider North-Eastern region has increasingly attracted attention for its distinctive flavours, indigenous ingredients and traditional cooking methods. Many regional dishes feature seasonal vegetables, herbs, fermented foods, boiled preparations and relatively simple use of oil and spices. These culinary traditions reflect the region’s rich cultural heritage and offer visitors an opportunity to explore its unique food identity.
The Terminal provides an opportunity to bring traditional regional cuisine into a modern, organised food-service environment, alongside established national and international food brands. Such platforms can help local food entrepreneurs showcase regional specialities, reach wider customer groups and develop sustainable business opportunities.
A New Avenue for Youth Entrepreneurship and Employment
The growth of organised food courts, restaurants, cafés and roadside dining establishments is creating new opportunities for educated young people to explore entrepreneurship beyond conventional employment. From managing food outlets and preparing regional dishes to handling logistics, digital payments, marketing and customer service, the sector can generate a range of direct and indirect livelihood opportunities.
The Terminal, with seating for approximately 250 guests and a mix of food and retail outlets, represents an emerging commercial opportunity for Guwahati. Its round-the-clock operations are also expected to serve railway passengers and other customers travelling at different hours.
The establishment reflects the growing interest in organised retail, hospitality and food-service businesses in Assam. With suitable planning, professional management and sustained customer demand, such ventures can encourage further private investment and strengthen the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Guwahati: The Gateway to North-East India
Guwahati occupies a strategic position as the principal gateway to the North-Eastern region. Improvements in connectivity, the expansion of commercial activity and growing interest in the region’s natural beauty, cultural diversity and tourism destinations are creating opportunities for businesses across hospitality, transport, retail and food services.
A modern, accessible dining destination near the railway station can add convenience for visitors arriving in the city and contribute to a more diverse urban hospitality landscape. The Terminal’s combination of regional cuisine and familiar food brands may also help introduce visitors to the culinary traditions of Assam while meeting a variety of dining preferences.
Investment, Economic Growth and a Brighter Future
The broader significance of such commercial developments lies in their potential to create a positive economic cycle. New businesses generate employment and income; greater purchasing power supports local markets; expanding commercial activity can increase economic transactions and contribute to government revenues through applicable taxes and fees.
However, sustained growth depends on more than infrastructure alone. Business viability, skilled workers, quality standards, hygiene, customer satisfaction and responsible financial management remain essential for long-term success.
The Terminal’s launch sends an encouraging signal about the possibilities emerging in Guwahati’s hospitality and food-service sectors. It may inspire other entrepreneurs and investors to explore new ventures in the city, particularly those that combine contemporary business models with Assam’s distinctive culinary and cultural identity.
As Guwahati continues to evolve as a commercial and tourism hub, initiatives that connect local heritage with modern consumer experiences can help create employment, promote entrepreneurship and broaden economic opportunities for the younger generation.
The Terminal is more than a new place to eat; it represents an opportunity to bring regional food culture, modern hospitality and entrepreneurial ambition together in one destination.
