Drinking enough fluids can help reduce the concentration of minerals in urine, making it harder for crystals to form and grow. However, preventing kidney stones involves more than simply following the popular “eight glasses a day” rule.

Kidney stones develop when urine becomes highly concentrated and minerals such as calcium and oxalate begin to crystallize. Calcium oxalate stones are the most common, although uric acid and infection-related stones can also occur. Adequate fluid intake helps dilute these substances and increases urine flow, allowing tiny crystals to be flushed from the urinary tract before they become larger stones.

How Much Water Is Enough?

The ideal amount varies from person to person. People who have previously developed kidney stones are often advised to maintain enough fluid intake to produce roughly 2.5 litres of urine per day, although the amount of fluid required depends on climate, physical activity and individual health conditions.

Hydration should also be maintained throughout the day rather than concentrated into a few large servings. People who sweat heavily or live in hot environments may require additional fluids.

Water Is Not the Whole Story

Diet also plays an important role. High sodium consumption can increase calcium levels in urine and potentially raise stone risk. Maintaining adequate dietary calcium, rather than unnecessarily eliminating calcium-rich foods, may also be beneficial because calcium can bind oxalate in the digestive tract.

Citrate, naturally found in citrus fruits, may provide additional protection against certain calcium stones. However, sugary drinks should not be considered a substitute for healthy hydration.

Prevention Requires a Personal Approach

Genetics, previous stone formation, diet, body weight, certain medical conditions and environmental factors can all influence risk. People who repeatedly develop stones despite adequate hydration may require medical evaluation, including urine testing, to identify specific risk factors.

Ultimately, drinking sufficient water remains one of the most accessible tools for kidney-stone prevention. But the strongest strategy combines consistent hydration with sensible dietary choices and appropriate medical guidance.
