New Delhi/Tashkent: India and Uzbekistan have taken a significant step towards reshaping their engagement in Central Asia by elevating bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The decision, announced following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s talks with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent, reflects the growing importance both countries attach to economic cooperation, connectivity, security and technology.
A key objective of the upgraded partnership is to increase annual bilateral trade to US$5 billion by 2030. Bilateral trade crossed US$1 billion last year, creating a stronger foundation for expansion in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, healthcare, mining, critical minerals, energy, textiles and technology. Both sides have also agreed to address trade barriers and promote investment and industrial partnerships.
Energy security is emerging as another important pillar. India and Uzbekistan are working towards a framework for the long-term supply of uranium from Uzbekistan, adding a strategic dimension to their cooperation in civilian nuclear energy. Collaboration in critical minerals and mining is also expected to receive greater attention.
Connectivity remains crucial because Uzbekistan is landlocked. Greater use of multimodal transport routes, including links through the wider regional network, could help reduce logistical barriers and open new opportunities for Indian businesses seeking access to Central Asian markets.
The partnership also extends into defence, digital public infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare and cultural exchanges. Cooperation involving India’s digital ecosystem, including UPI, could further strengthen technological and commercial links.
The agreement carries significance beyond bilateral relations. For India, Uzbekistan is a strategically located gateway to Central Asia; for Tashkent, stronger engagement with New Delhi supports a diversified, multi-vector foreign policy.
The transformation from a strategic partnership into a comprehensive one therefore represents more than a diplomatic upgrade. It signals an ambitious attempt by India and Uzbekistan to build a long-term economic and strategic partnership capable of influencing the future architecture of Eurasia.
