Yum Brands, parent company of Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Habit Burger & Grill, partners with NVIDIA to introduce AI services in its restaurants. The initial phase includes AI voice-ordering systems for drive-throughs and phone orders, created by Yum with NVIDIA tools. This technology will debut in 500 locations by the second quarter of this year.
Yum Brands aims to transition all orders to digital channels, eliminating human order-takers to boost sales and enhance internal operations. Future changes involve implementing computer vision tech to detect incorrect orders and utilizing an AI system to extract valuable feedback from online discussions about their restaurants.
Joe Park, Chief Digital & Technology Officer at Yum Brands, stressed the shift towards internal AI development for owning intellectual property and technology. This aligns with their new platform “Byte by Yum,” featuring apps made with NVIDIA tools like NIM microservices, designed for AI development.
Yum Brands prioritizes voice-ordering and digital channels to process all orders. Over 50% of their orders now come in digitally, a significant jump from 19% in 2019. This shift leads to higher spending by consumers due to personalized and upselling opportunities. Despite economic challenges, Park appreciates the benefits of digital sales.
Park reassured in-restaurant workers that, despite AI advancements, their roles will adapt rather than be replaced. Yum is enhancing its mobile app for 20,000+ outlets, now providing insights from online reviews for proactive managerial guidance. This signifies a shift towards a modernized approach to service and hospitality.
