Karbi Anglong Greenfield Airport: A Gateway to Connectivity, Growth and Regional Prosperity

A high-level delegation led by Dr. Tuliram Ronghang, MLA and Chief Executive Member (CEM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), met Shri Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Hon’ble Union Minister for Civil Aviation, to reiterate the importance of the proposed Greenfield Airport in Karbi Anglong and seek further progress on the long-awaited project.

The proposed airport is envisioned not merely as an aviation infrastructure project, but as a transformative gateway for economic growth, connectivity and inclusive development in the region. While the project will significantly benefit the indigenous people of Karbi Anglong, its strategic location is expected to provide wider advantages to the people of Assam and neighbouring Nagaland, facilitating easier movement of people, goods, services and ideas across the region.

The delegation emphasised that connectivity is the foundation of development. Improved air connectivity can stimulate tourism, trade, investment, entrepreneurship and employment while opening new markets for the region’s rich agricultural, handicraft and cultural products. Better connectivity can also strengthen the region’s integration with major economic centres and generate new avenues for revenue and sustainable economic growth.

During the meeting, the Union Civil Aviation Minister informed the delegation that a team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is expected to undertake a site inspection in the first week of September 2026. The proposed inspection marks an important step towards taking the project forward.

The delegation comprised Shri Amarsing Tisso, Hon’ble MP & EM; Dr. Habbey Teron, Hon’ble Deputy Speaker, Assam Legislative Assembly; Shri Lunsing Teron, Hon’ble MLA & EM; Smt. Niso Terangpi, Hon’ble MLA; Dr. Jayanta Rongpi, former MP; Dr. Mongve Rongpi, MAC; Shri Elwin Teron, Chief Advisor to CEM; Shri Khorsing Teron, Advisor to CEM; Dr. Janta Pator; and Shri Keshav Timung.

The proposed Greenfield Airport has the potential to become a catalyst for a new era of connectivity, enterprise and prosperity in Karbi Anglong and the wider Northeast.
