Delhi’s traditional Dussehra celebrations are taking an unconventional turn this year with the introduction of a towering 30-foot cockroach effigy alongside the iconic figure of Ravan at Ramlila Maidan. Organised under the initiative of the Shri Dharmik Leela Committee, this unusual addition seeks to connect the age-old message of the victory of good over evil with the social and civic challenges confronting modern society.
Traditionally, the burning of Ravan, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad represents the destruction of arrogance, greed and other negative human qualities. The giant cockroach introduces a contemporary dimension to this cultural tradition, symbolising persistent problems such as corruption, administrative negligence, poor sanitation and social disharmony. Its ability to survive difficult conditions makes it a powerful metaphor for issues that continue to trouble society despite repeated efforts to eliminate them.
The creation of such a distinctive effigy also demonstrates the adaptability and creativity of India’s traditional artisans. Using materials such as bamboo and paper, craftsmen have transformed conventional effigy-making techniques into an unusual artistic presentation. The project reflects how traditional craftsmanship can evolve while retaining its cultural significance and connecting with present-day concerns.
Beyond its visual appeal, the initiative carries an important civic message. It encourages people to look beyond symbolic celebrations and recognise their collective responsibility towards building a cleaner, more accountable and harmonious society. The idea also resonates with the broader objectives of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, emphasising that cleanliness and social responsibility require sustained public participation.
The unusual spectacle is expected to attract considerable attention from visitors, tourists and younger audiences, while generating discussion through traditional media and social platforms. Delhi’s Ramlila celebrations also support the livelihoods of artisans, vendors, performers and numerous workers involved in organising the festival. Innovative attractions can further enhance public interest and contribute to economic activity around the venue.
However, the symbolic destruction of an effigy alone cannot resolve deeply rooted social problems. Its real significance lies in inspiring citizens to translate the message into meaningful action.
The 30-foot cockroach therefore represents more than an unconventional addition to Dussehra festivities. It illustrates how India’s cultural traditions can remain relevant by addressing contemporary realities. As the flames consume the effigy, the enduring message remains clear: the true victory over evil requires not only celebration but also determination, civic awareness and collective responsibility.
