Building Global Competitiveness through Innovation, Sustainability and Strategic Collaboration
The growing engagement between India and Italy in the textile sector marks a significant step towards strengthening bilateral trade, investment, technological exchange and industrial partnerships. The visit of Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, along with the Indian delegation to Italy, reflects India’s commitment to expanding international cooperation and positioning its textile industry as a globally competitive, innovation-driven sector.
A key highlight of the delegation’s visit was Day 3 in Prato, one of Italy’s most prominent textile manufacturing clusters, renowned for its rich textile heritage, specialised manufacturing capabilities and thriving circular textile economy. The programme commenced with an interaction with the President of Confindustria Toscana Nord (CTN), followed by a seminar on India–Italy cooperation in textiles and fashion. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral trade, attracting investment, promoting technological exchange and developing sustainable industrial partnerships. Bharat Tex 2027 was highlighted as an important global platform for deepening industry engagement and exploring new business opportunities.
The seminar was followed by one-to-one Business-to-Business (B2B) meetings between Indian and Italian industry representatives. These interactions provided an opportunity to establish direct business linkages, identify areas of mutual interest and explore collaborative ventures. Visits to textile manufacturing facilities in Prato further offered valuable insights into advanced manufacturing practices, material innovation, industrial expertise and sustainable production models.
A major learning from the visit was Prato’s interconnected textile ecosystem, where specialised enterprises, shared manufacturing knowledge and strong industry networks contribute to innovation and global competitiveness. This model offers valuable lessons for India in strengthening textile clusters, integrating design institutions and research capabilities with industry, and transforming traditional strengths into globally competitive enterprises.
The emerging opportunities under the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) further reinforce the prospects for deeper economic engagement and improved market access. India’s rich heritage in handloom and handicrafts, combined with Italy’s expertise in design, technology and specialised manufacturing, creates significant potential for mutually beneficial partnerships.
The future of the textile sector will depend not merely on manufacturing capacity, but on the effective integration of knowledge, technology, sustainability, design and market-oriented innovation. The India–Italy partnership, supported by platforms such as Bharat Tex 2027, can serve as a catalyst for new manufacturing collaborations, enhanced exports and sustainable growth, particularly for India’s handloom and handicrafts sector.
