The new English football season gets underway with a blockbuster encounter as Arsenal take on Manchester City in the FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium. More than a traditional curtain-raiser, the fixture offers both sides an early opportunity to make a statement ahead of another demanding domestic campaign.
The Community Shield, formerly known as the Charity Shield, has been part of the English football calendar since 1908. Bringing together the Premier League and FA Cup elite, the competition has traditionally provided an intriguing early test of form, fitness and tactical preparation.
