Srinagar: In a significant initiative aimed at strengthening traditional craftsmanship while creating new livelihood opportunities for artisans, the Handicrafts Service Centre (HSC), Srinagar, under the National Handicrafts Development Programme (NHDP), has commenced a two-month Design Development Workshop (DDW) at Kachan, Ganderbal, focusing on the traditional Willow Wicker craft of Kashmir.
The intensive workshop is designed to empower 30 Willow Wicker artisans with contemporary product designs, improved craftsmanship and market-oriented skills, enabling them to respond more effectively to changing consumer preferences and emerging market opportunities.
Bridging Tradition with Contemporary Design
A key feature of the workshop is the active involvement of empanelled designer Ms. Nighat Sidiq, who will introduce and demonstrate innovative, contemporary and market-driven designs. The design interventions are intended to help artisans diversify their product range while retaining the distinctive identity and traditional character of Kashmir’s Willow Wicker craftsmanship.
Alongside design development, State Awardee Master Craftsperson Shri Ghulam Mohammad Magray will provide practical demonstrations on advanced production techniques, improved finishing methods and other innovations aimed at enhancing product quality and craftsmanship.
From Workshop to Market
A particularly important aspect of the initiative is its emphasis on market linkage. The products developed during the workshop will not remain limited to demonstration or training purposes. The newly developed products are planned to be showcased and offered for sale to buyers, giving participating artisans valuable direct exposure to the market and helping them understand consumer preferences and commercial requirements.
This approach seeks to transform design intervention into a tangible economic opportunity by connecting traditional skills, contemporary design and market demand.
The initiative reflects the broader objective of strengthening the handicrafts sector by enabling artisans to preserve their traditional knowledge while adapting their products to modern markets.
