An auction by RM Sotheby’s on May 24 sold Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari F2001, the car that secured his fourth F1 title in 2001 for $18.17 million. The vehicle, victorious in the Monaco and Hungarian Grand Prix, holds significant historical value.
The F2001, known as the “Crown Jewel,” was expected to fetch $16.9 million but sold for a record $13.2 million, outstripping predictions. This set a new benchmark for F1 cars driven by Schumacher, surpassing the $13.2 million mark set by Schumacher’s 2003 Ferrari F2003 in 2022.
The F2001 secures the fourth position as one of the most expensive F1 cars sold at an auction. The top spot is held by a Mercedes W196 streamliner, driven by legends Fangio and Moss in the 1950s, selling for $52.52 million in 2023.
The RM Sotheby’s auction featured F1 memorabilia, reflecting surging interest in such items. Notably, Ayrton Senna’s McLaren-Honda helmet sold for almost $1 million in April, showcasing the trend’s significant growth. Additionally, Charles Leclerc’s Bell HP77 fetched $329,944 this year, making a notable sale in the helmet market.
