United States President Donald Trump announced a new tariff system for around 180 countries, including key trading partners like India and China, during a roundtable in the United Arab Emirates. Most countries will now face tariffs without prior negotiations or agreements, as Trump stated that letters will be sent out within the next few weeks informing businesses of their new costs for operating in the United States.
The US recently signed a trade agreement with the UK and an interim deal with China to cut tariffs for 90 days after talks in Geneva. Discussions are ongoing with India as Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal visits Washington, DC to negotiate a trade deal. He will meet with Secretary Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer during his visit.
Trump’s sudden tariffs on many countries have sparked concerns about their arbitrary nature, particularly the subjective calculations behind the reciprocal tariffs. Nations are anxious about potential tariff letters from Lutnick or Bessent shaping the tariffs they’ll encounter. The 90-day pause looms over both the universal reciprocal tariffs and the China tariffs.
