French tech company Alcatel is making a comeback in the Indian smartphone market after seven years with an initial investment of $30 million. TCL Communication, a Chinese firm, will manage Alcatel’s business in India under a trademark license from Nokia. Alcatel phones will be manufactured locally and sold through Flipkart.
Atul Vivek, Alcatel’s Chief Business Officer, revealed the company’s Indian strategy, focusing on manufacturing, supply chain management, and a $30 million investment. They plan to adjust the investment based on market feedback and models chosen for launch. Vivek highlighted Alcatel’s interest in the ₹20,000-₹25,000 price segment, intending to introduce stylus-equipped phones in this range.
Alcatel partners with Flipkart, a top Indian e-commerce platform. They will sell their smartphones online on Flipkart’s main website and the quick commerce arm, Flipkart Minutes. The company aims to launch its made-in-India smartphone by late May or early June, collaborating with a major electronics manufacturer in India, as stated by Alcatel’s COO, Ansh Rathi.
Vivek emphasized Alcatel’s dedication to the Indian market, with substantial investments planned for manufacturing, supply chain, marketing, and distribution. Their digital-first strategy aims to engage India’s young consumers. Innovative consumer programs and marketing strategies are also in the pipeline. Vivek conveyed confidence in their long-term commitment to India, emphasizing their intention to stay for the duration.
