A 49-year-old woman in Kolkata tested positive for human coronavirus HKU1 after experiencing a persistent fever, cough, and cold for 15 days. She is currently stable and receiving treatment at a private hospital in South Kolkata. The hospital assured that it is an isolated case but urged caution to prevent any potential spread.
Human coronavirus HKU1 affects the lungs and respiratory system, similar to SARS and MERS. Discovered in 2005, it’s not new and infects both humans and animals. In contrast to the global impact of COVID-19, HKU1 is common, with most people encountering it at some point in their lives.
Symptoms of HKU1 are similar to regular flu (runny nose, fever, coughing, wheezing, headache, sore throat). In severe cases, it can lead to bronchiolitis or pneumonia. The virus spreads like other coronaviruses, through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or by touching contaminated surfaces then touching one’s face.
No specific treatment or vaccine is available for human coronaviruses like HKU1 yet. However, symptom management can aid in a comfortable recovery as it is a self-limiting ailment. To prevent transmission, follow COVID-era guidelines: wash hands frequently, wear masks in crowds, cover mouth/nose when sneezing, and avoid touching face with unclean hands.
