Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu unveiled the 2025-26 state budget in the assembly, emphasizing welfare programs, job growth, and infrastructure. The government plans to host a yearly World Tamil Olympiad with a ₹1 crore award to support Tamil. Additionally, a museum named ‘Agaram,’ celebrating the Tamil language, will be built in Madurai.
The budget allocated ₹77 crore to aid 800 women through the Thozhi hostel scheme. Additionally, new hostels in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai will be built at a cost of ₹275cr. Furthermore, the government aims to fill 40,000 positions this fiscal year and provide bank loans with a 20% subsidy to one lakh women entrepreneurs, up to ₹10 lakh per loan.
The finance minister introduced a ₹3,500 crore housing scheme for low-income families, aiming to provide one lakh new houses. A global city will be built on 2,000+ acres outside Chennai, with educational institutions, industries, and infrastructure. Plans for a new airport at Rameswaram and expediting work on the Parandur airport were also announced.
The government is establishing a welfare board and a scheme providing ₹20,000 for gig workers to purchase e-scooters. Additionally, a scheme offering monthly stipends of ₹75,000 for 10 months has been introduced for 1,000 students taking union civil service preliminary exams, with bonus incentives of ₹25,000 and ₹50,000 for successful candidates.
A ₹2,500 crore fund for education loans was announced for one lakh students, along with the establishment of a new Mini-TIDEL Park in Virudhunagar district creating 6,600 job opportunities. Moreover, new undergraduate programs including Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Robotics, Electric Vehicle Technology, and Environmental Engineering will be introduced by the state government in the upcoming academic year.
