Axar Patel, a key player in India’s Champions Trophy win, will captain Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL season starting March 22, as announced by the franchise on March 14. He previously led DC in IPL 2024 in place of Rishabh Pant.
Patel, a key player for Delhi Capitals since 2019, was retained for ₹18 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. He has scored 1,653 runs in 150 matches at a strike rate of 130.88, while also taking 123 wickets with his left-arm spin at an economy of 7.28.
KL Rahul emerged as a strong contender for the leadership role in DC. He led Lucknow Super Giants to two playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023. His batting form is impressive, surpassing 500 runs every full season since 2018, notably reaching 520 runs in IPL 2024.
Delhi Capitals will start their IPL 2025 against Lucknow Super Giants at ACA-VDCA Stadium on March 24. Before that, the team will train in New Delhi for three days starting this week and then head to Visakhapatnam on March 17. This phase holds significance for Patel as he prepares for his new role as captain.
