Modi government requests report on social media's efforts to combat child abuse.

India’s MeitY instructed social media platforms to provide a report within two weeks on their efforts to combat child sexual abuse material (CSAM) during a meeting on February 19. Representatives from Google, Meta, and other companies were present, along with officials from the NHRC.

During the meeting, the government announced the Sahyog platform for direct reporting of CSAM content to local law enforcement. Social media reports will be reviewed by NHRC and forwarded to a Parliamentary Committee for consideration.

US-based social media firms face a legal dilemma due to contrasting CSAM reporting rules in India and the US. While mandated to report CSAM content exclusively to NCMEC in the US, they must comply with a 2024 Indian Supreme Court decision requiring reporting to both NCMEC and local authorities under the POCSO Act.

The platforms are worried that following the Indian mandate might conflict with US laws. In a meeting last month, the issue was discussed by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), involving government officials and platform representatives debating the legal conflict and potential solutions. Platforms proposed that resolving the issue may require formal agreements between Indian authorities and NCMEC for a compliant reporting mechanism.
