Assam's identity is now associated with semiconductors, according to the Chief Minister.

With only four days until the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed optimism about Assam’s upcoming semiconductor plant attracting foreign investors. Speaking at Lok Sewa Bhawan, he highlighted the increasing global interest in Assam’s semiconductor sector. Sarma noted the state’s association with semiconductors and the rising demand from foreign nations for semiconductor ecosystems. During his visits to Japan and Korea in 2019, roadshows saw minimal audience, but this year showed a shift with more interest in Assam’s potential as a destination for advanced chip-making facilities.

Shortly after Sarma’s return from Japan, the Japanese ambassador visited Assam’s semiconductor unit, highlighting global interest. The Jagiroad unit will host India’s largest OSAT facility, projected to produce 48 million chips daily. Chip production is on track to start by year-end if construction proceeds as scheduled.

The Chief Minister highlighted the potential for reverse migration, noting that many Assamese youth working outside the state are keen to return and contribute to the semiconductor industry. Sarma emphasized attracting more industries to enable youth to join Assam’s growth. With Assam becoming a key player in India’s semiconductor sector, attention is now on the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit on February 25-26.
