HP acquired Humane, a start-up known for the Ai Pin device, for $116 million. The deal encompasses Humane’s AI tech, software, IP, and patents. Some Humane employees will join HP. However, the Ai Pin device will be discontinued, as confirmed by Humane to its customers.
Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, Apple veterans, founded Humane to create a wearable, the $699 Ai Pin, meant to replace smartphones. This wearable, controlled by voice or laser display on the hand, failed to meet sales goals despite the support of investors like Marc Benioff and Sam Altman.
The Ai Pin received mixed reviews due to AI software and battery issues. Humane aimed to sell 100,000 pins in the first year but only secured 10,000 orders, prompting a search for funding and potential sale for over $1 billion. HP is exploring AI integration in laptops, collaborating with Microsoft on Copilot+ PCs last year.
HP plans to integrate Humane’s tech for a more experience-driven approach. Employees from Humane will join HP IQ, an innovation lab enhancing HP’s product ecosystem. Chaudhri, Bongiorno, and most of the startup’s team will transition to HP, confirmed by a company spokesperson.
Enrique Lores, HP’s President and CEO, emphasized the company’s AI dedication during an analyst call. He mentioned aggressive investment in new AI capabilities and software. This aligns with HP’s focus on enhancing products using advanced technology.
