Future Renault cars could feature steering yokes in place of wheels.

Renault considers adding steering yokes to future cars, tested on the unique Filante streamliner. This car features a two-spoke yoke with an integrated instrument screen and electronic wheel control. Unlike traditional racks, it uses electric motors for tactile feedback, simulating weight and bumps.

Sandeep Bhambra, Renault’s concept car design chief, highlighted the interior space benefits of removing the column. He acknowledged challenges in implementing this innovation in production cars. Despite approval by manufacturers like Lexus and Toyota, Tesla’s Cybertruck adoption of steer-by-wire, Bhambra identified “customer acceptance” as a significant obstacle.

Renault’s interior design chief, Stephane Maiore, mentioned limited customer feedback on steer-by-wire technology. They aim to utilize the Filante as a testing ground for the technology. At the Filante’s debut at the Retromobile show, Renault design boss Gilles Vidal expressed uncertainty regarding customer demand for by-wire systems.

Renault’s Filante streamliner replaces traditional throttle and brake pedals with video game controller-style triggers mounted on the rear of the steering spokes. Maiore clarified the conceptual nature of this feature, indicating it is unlikely to be included in future production cars.
