Sensex nosedives 600 points over Trump's reciprocal tariff policy

The Indian stock market crashed today, with Sensex and Nifty both dropping nearly 1%. Sensex fell over 610 points to 75,525, and Nifty decreased by 230 points to 22,800, attributed to concerns about US President Donald Trump’s tariff policy and ongoing foreign investor outflows.

Investor confidence wavered due to Trump’s vow to impose reciprocal tariffs, including on India. Trump stated, “Whatever India charges, we will charge them.” This tariff uncertainty led to a significant withdrawal of ₹19,077 crore by FIIs from Indian equities this month, following a massive ₹78,027 crore sell-off in January.

Weak third-quarter earnings from companies like Natco Pharma, Senco Gold, and Deepak Nitrite exacerbated the market downturn, sparking worries about Indian corporate growth. The rupee’s persistent weakness, amid global economic uncertainties, led to increased foreign investor outflows, with FIIs selling equities worth ₹2,789.91 crore on Thursday.
