South Korea advises on travel to Santorini and other areas due to recent earthquakes.

South Korea issued a special travel advisory for Santorini and other Greek islands – Anafi, Ios, and Amorgos – due to frequent earthquakes in the past two weeks. Over 700 earthquakes of magnitudes 3-4 hit the islands since January 24. Evacuations are underway, schools are closed, and gatherings are discouraged. South Korean citizens are advised to cancel trips to these islands and residents are urged to leave unless urgent. This advisory is a response to urgent security risks and can last up to 90 days, according to Yonhap news agency.

Notably, Santorini often experiences tremors, with the most recent significant quake in 1956, a 7.5 magnitude event that killed over 50 people and injured more than 100. Earlier this year, residents evacuated the island due to a series of earthquakes, prompting school closures and warnings against large gatherings. Prime Minister Mitsotakis called for calm amidst the situation.

Santorini, known as Greece’s “Instagram Island,” receives millions of tourists annually despite having only around 2,000 permanent residents. Recently, many locals left for the mainland due to safety concerns. Greek officials advised those remaining to stay vigilant due to increased seismic activity. While no major damage occurred, precautionary emergency measures were implemented. Schools were closed until today, and residents were urged to avoid large indoor gatherings.
