India’s fruit and vegetable exports surge 47.3 pc in last 5 years

In the past five years, APEDA’s financial aid boosted India’s fruit and veg exports by 47.3%. Fresh produce reached 123 nations in FY2023-24. India entered 17 new markets like Brazil, Georgia, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, Czech Republic, and Ghana in the last three years.

Through various measures such as international trade fairs, market access negotiations, and buyer-seller meets, the Department of Commerce aids APEDA member exporters nationwide in promoting scheduled products like fruits and vegetables. This assistance is part of the Agriculture and Processed Foods Export Promotion Scheme for the 15th Finance Commission Cycle. Consequently, there has been a 47.3% increase in fruit and vegetable exports from 2019-20 to 2023-24.

Over the past five years, there has been a 41.50% growth in value. Key states for fruit and vegetable production are Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Karnataka. The Department of Commerce collaborates closely with the Ministry of Agriculture to prioritize agricultural products for market access negotiations, leading to new markets for Indian commodities in the last three years.

Indian potatoes and onions in Serbia, baby corn and fresh banana in Canada, pomegranate arils in Australia, USA, Serbia, and New Zealand, and whole pomegranates in Australia through irradiation treatment.
