In a strange case from Bareilly, a 40-year-old woman was arrested for falsely accusing the city’s mayor. She claimed to have a bullet in her chest, faking abduction and gang-rape to frame the mayor and his son. CCTV footage and medical proof debunked her story. The woman and two accomplices in the bizarre scheme are now in custody.
In 2021, the mayor’s wife fired the woman, possibly prompting her to plot revenge against the mayor and his son. Police found no evidence of abduction and determined that the bullet she claimed was in her chest had never been shot.
On March 29, she arrived at a Bareilly hospital with a bullet in her chest, claiming she was abducted, raped, shot, and abandoned by five men in a moving car. The mayor and his son were accused, but discrepancies in her account surfaced as the investigation progressed.
Police found no evidence of her alleged abduction after verifying CCTV footage of her arrival at the hospital in an auto-rickshaw. SSP Anurag Arya confirmed this, stating that there was no abduction. The investigation also disproved her claim of being shot by detecting no gunpowder residue at the spot and revealing that the bullet in her chest had not been fired.
The woman sought help from Rohatash at a hospital to retrieve a bullet, and he confessed to the police. She later visited Hajipur to find Sharif Khan, a local quack, who charged ₹2,500 to implant the bullet under her skin after sterilizing the area with a heated coin, as Arya described.
The woman, along with Rohatash and Sharif Khan, was arrested last week. The police are seeking four more individuals linked to staging the incident. She had previously lodged a complaint against the mayor in 2022, but withdrew her statement, leading to the case being closed.
