Will the Gensis EV debut in India to compete with the Defender?

Genesis revealed the new X Gran Equator Concept at the 2025 New York Auto Show, previewing a rugged SUV set to compete with luxury off-roaders like the Land Rover Defender, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. This launch followed the recent introduction of two coupe and convertible concepts based on the G90 at the Seoul Mobility Show 2025.

The Genesis X Gran Equator Concept showcases the brand’s “Athletic Elegance” design evolution, focusing on off-roading. Its design features a raised estate car-like profile with a long hood, short front overhang, and narrow windshield. The vehicle includes Genesis’s signature ‘two-line’ LED lights and silver roof rails.

The X Gran Equator Concept’s interior features a retro touch with prominent physical controls. There are four circular digital displays resembling analog dials for navigation and wheel data. Additionally, the cabin includes a two-spoke steering wheel with buttons, chunky stalks, and a compact three-gauge digital cluster for speed, range, and time.

The X Gran Equator Concept is built on an offshoot of the Kia EV9 platform. Genesis plans to offer various powertrains in the production SUV, such as hybrids and range extenders. Hydrogen fuel cells won’t be included, despite advancements at Hyundai.

Genesis design chief hinted at a potential 2028-2029 launch for the production-spec X Gran Equator Concept. It’s uncertain if this model would reach the Indian market by late 2025 when Genesis plans to debut there. The vehicle’s robust design and premium features position it as a formidable competitor in the luxury off-roader category.
