Following its electoral success, the BJP, with 48 seats, is poised to select Delhi’s new Chief Minister, competing against the AAP with 22 seats. The appointment procedure, monitored by two central observers, will take place at a legislature party meeting on Sunday.
There’s a rising call in the BJP for a Jat or Dalit leader as the next Chief Minister due to their strong electoral support. Out of 48 BJP MLAs, 11 are Jats and four are from Scheduled Castes, a first in a decade.
The BJP’s selection for the new CM is influenced by the Bihar Assembly elections to preserve caste balance. No BJP-led state has a Jat or Dalit CM. Potential candidates include Parvesh Verma, Rekha Gupta, Ashish Sood, Satish Upadhyay, and Shikha Roy.
Approval for the new CM requires Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nod, expected upon his return from the US visit. The new government likely assumes office before February 26 as the current Assembly term ends. BJP may introduce a government with one CM and two Dy CMs to reflect Delhi’s diverse demographics, following models from states like Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Ashish Sood is a frontrunner for the CM post due to his party ties and victory in Janakpuri. Preference will be given to candidates with a “clean public image” and under 60. The new CM decision for Delhi aims to include diverse communities and maintain political strategies for upcoming elections.
