Volkswagen is recalling 177,493 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs in the US, from the 2024 and 2025 model years. The recall is due to a plastic engine cover touching hot engine parts, posing fire risks.
The problem, as per NHTSA recall documents, is that engine covers might move after service without a clear explanation. This issue seems linked to incorrect reinstallation of the plastic covers post-service.
Improperly installed engine covers can make them come loose and touch hot engine surfaces, potentially melting the cover material. If the melted material contacts extremely hot surfaces like the exhaust turbocharger, it could cause a fire in the engine compartment.
Volkswagen has confirmed fires linked to an engine cover issue. The initial questionable fire occurred in October 2023 without a clear cause identified. Over the next 13 months, three engine fires were traced back to improperly installed covers. These incidents led to a recall following an investigation.
Volkswagen plans to address the issue by removing the engine cover. A spokesperson mentioned that a service bulletin will inform customers to return for the installation of a new underhood engine cover in the future.
