Indian cricket legend Kris Srikkanth hinted that Virat Kohli may have chosen not to captain RCB in the upcoming IPL season, likely to concentrate on his batting. Speculation on Kohli’s return as captain arose after he resigned in 2021. RCB revealed Rajat Patidar as the skipper for the 2025 season.
Srikkanth praised RCB’s choice of Patidar as new captain on his YouTube channel, emphasizing that Kohli would probably have declined the role to focus on batting. He suggested that the decision was likely made in consultation with Kohli, backing Patidar as a suitable pick due to his IPL performance.
Srikkanth compared Patidar’s appointment to Dhoni’s as T20 World Cup captain in 2007. He noted low expectations for Dhoni back then. Regarding Patidar, Srikkanth said, “The expectations as captain aren’t high; he will lead independently,” on his YouTube show.
During the Bengaluru announcement event, RCB’s Team Director Mo Bobat hailed Kohli’s ongoing leadership within the franchise. He emphasized that Kohli’s natural leadership abilities shine even without a formal captaincy title. Bobat also commended Kohli’s outstanding on-field performance and vibrant energy in the last season.
RCB’s head coach Andy Flower praised Kohli for his professional and supportive reaction to the decision on the new captain, Patidar. Flower admired Kohli’s integrity and maturity in their discussions. With Kohli now focusing on batting, RCB looks forward to his return to form in IPL 2025.
