Vijay Rupani's body was identified by matching DNA.

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s body was identified through DNA matching at 11:10am on Sunday and then handed over to his family. He was one of the 242 individuals aboard the Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad. Despite originally planning to travel to London on May 19, he changed his plans and opted to fly on June 5 to meet his wife and daughter.

Rupani secured seat 2D on flight AI 171 for June 12, which took off from Ahmedabad and crashed near the airport into BJ Medical College hostel. Within just 32 seconds of being airborne, the plane created a huge fireball, engulfing the hostel.

Rupani served as Gujarat’s 16th Chief Minister from August 2016 to September 2021. Born in Rangoon in 1956, he relocated to Rajkot in the 1960s amid regional unrest. Rising from a student activist to a municipal corporator in 1987, he later held diverse roles like transport, water supply, and labor minister over three decades.

From 2006-2012, Rupani served in the Rajya Sabha. In 2014, he became a minister in Gujarat and later assumed the role of CM until 2016. He resigned ahead of the assembly elections to assist in the BJP’s leadership transition, but stayed involved in party activities as a senior adviser, providing guidance on Gujarat unit matters, state policies, and election topics.

Rupani viewed ‘1206’ as a lucky symbol, displayed on his car, scooter, and official vehicle plate as CM. Sadly, this number became associated with his death on June 12 (12/06), a date with personal significance according to friends, family, and party colleagues.
