Trump criticizes India for high tariffs, sparking debate.

US President Trump accused India of imposing “massive tariffs” on American goods during a White House press conference, stating that India’s high tariffs have hindered US exports. He mentioned that India has agreed to reduce these tariffs significantly, attributing this to the pressure of being exposed for their actions.

In his speech to Congress, Trump criticized other countries for imposing higher tariffs than the US, stating it’s time for the US to reciprocate. He named the EU, China, Brazil, India, Mexico, and Canada as examples of countries with much higher tariffs.

Trump plans to enforce “reciprocal tariffs” starting April 2, citing a policy of equal tarifffor-tariff retaliation that he originally mentioned during his campaign. He reinforced this stance at a recent conference with Indian PM Narendra Modi, criticizing India’s high tariffs.

Despite ongoing tariff debates, US-India trade is significant, with total goods trade valued at $129.2 billion in 2024. The US goods trade deficit with India rose by 5.4% to $45.7 billion in 2024. This suggests that high tariffs, though potentially challenging, do not greatly impede bilateral trade between the nations.
