The Italian supercar Maserati MC20 set a new world record for the fastest autonomous car by reaching 318km/h at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center, surpassing the previous record of 309km/h by an Indy Autonomous Challenge-built race car in April 2022. The achievement was made possible by a self-driving software developed by Politecnico di Milano, Italy’s leading scientific-technological university.
“This record is not just about speed; it’s a vital test of autonomous algorithms in extreme conditions,” stated Paul Mitchell, CEO of Indy Autonomous Challenge, emphasizing the significance of pushing AI-driver software and robotics hardware to the limit with streetcars. The aim is to translate learnings from autonomous racing to ensure safe, sustainable, high-speed autonomous mobility on highways.
The Maserati MC20, symbolizing both speed and luxury, starts at $239,000. It boasts a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine called the Nettuno, generating 621hp and 728Nm of torque. This power is channeled to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
