The price of homemade thali decreases in January.

In January, home-cooked vegetarian thali prices dropped by 9% compared to December, with non-veg thali prices falling by 4%. This decline was mainly due to a significant decrease in tomato prices by 34% from the previous month, driven by fresh rabi crop arrivals. Additionally, potato prices fell by 16% and onion prices by 21% from December, contributing to the overall thali cost reduction. The cost of non-veg thalis decreased at a slower rate due to a 1% increase in broiler prices, as reported by Crisil Ratings.

In January, vegetarian thali prices increased by 2% while non-vegetarian thali prices surged by 17% due to higher chicken costs compared to the previous year. The rise in non-veg thali costs was mainly due to a 33% increase in broiler prices, which contributed to half of its total cost, driven by last year’s low base prices. Potato prices rose by 35%, reaching Rs 31 per kg in January 2025 from Rs 23 last year. Additionally, pulses and cooking oil prices also increased. On the other hand, there was an 11% year-on-year reduction in LPG fuel costs, dropping to Rs 803 per 14.2 kg cylinder in Delhi from Rs 903 last year, which partially offset the price hikes of other ingredients.

In India, retail inflation based on the Consumer Price Index reached a 4-month low of 5.22% in December, driven by lower prices of vegetables, pulses, and sugar. This decrease continues a trend from October’s 14-month high of 6.21%. Furthermore, November saw a decline to 5.48%. The drop in December’s inflation can be attributed to the price moderation in essential food items.
