In May 2025, the cost of preparing vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis in India declined by about 6% YoY, attributed to lower prices of key ingredients such as onions, tomatoes, potatoes, and broiler chicken by a CRISIL report. Both meal types were impacted by these price fluctuations.
The report describes a vegetarian thali with roti, veggies (onion, tomato, potato), rice, dal, curd, and salad. In contrast, a non-veg thali swaps dal for chicken (broiler). Analysis shows meal costs decreased due to lower veggie prices and broiler chicken costs.
The report shows significant price decreases for essential Indian cooking vegetables. Tomato prices dropped 29% to ₹23/kg from ₹33/kg last year. Onion and potato prices fell by 15% and 16% respectively due to factors like crop damage, rainfall, and water shortages causing increased demand and prices last year.
Due to oversupply after lower demand due to bird flu in some regions, both vegetables and chicken prices decreased by 6%. The report attributes the limited decrease in thali prices to a 19% rise in vegetable oil costs (from import duty) and a 6% increase in LPG cylinder prices.
In May, the cost of vegetarian thalis remained steady, but non-vegetarian thalis decreased by 2% due to price changes. Potatoes and tomatoes went up by 3% and 10% each, while onion prices decreased by 10%, balancing the overall cost. Broiler chicken prices fell by an estimated 4%, making non-vegetarian thalis more affordable in May compared to April.
