Tesla EVs priced at around ₹21L may launch in India this April.

Tesla plans to enter the Indian market in April, introducing imported EVs from its Berlin facility as part of its expansion strategy. This move aligns with founder Elon Musk’s emphasis on establishing local sales and service networks before beginning local production.

Tesla plans to launch cheaper EV models in India, starting at $25,000 (₹21 lakh), with initial focus on Mumbai and Delhi. CNBC-TV18 mentions potential debut sites in BKC and AeroCity Mumbai, aligning with Reuters’ earlier reports on two showroom locations in these cities.

Tesla is hiring for multiple roles in India ahead of its launch, posting 13 mid-level positions in Mumbai Suburban area. This move follows Musk’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his US visit, indicating the company’s proactive approach to expansion.

Musk previously mentioned Tesla’s manufacturing plans in India depend on the ability to sell and service its cars there. He suggested in August 2021 that local production might be considered if initial sales of imported vehicles are successful, despite concerns about India’s high car import duties (70%-100% for CBUs).
