Tesla plans to introduce an economical version of the Model Y in China to boost its standing in the EV market. The model, called “E41,” will be made at the Shanghai Gigafactory with mass production set to start in 2026.
The upcoming Model Y will be smaller and cost at least 20% less to make compared to the 2023 version. Priced around $36,351, the current mid-sized SUV aligns with Elon Musk’s plan for more affordable models by mid-2025, yet specifics on Model Y’s price reduction remain undisclosed.
The new Model Y will target the Chinese market primarily but will also be available in Europe and North America. Production timelines for these regions are currently undisclosed. Despite being China’s top-selling car during 2023-2024, Tesla’s Model Y faces tough competition from domestic brands, which have introduced at least six rival models recently.
Xiaomi, known for its smartphones, entered the automotive market with the SU7 sedan, surpassing Tesla’s Model 3 monthly sales since December. This year, they are introducing the YU7 SUV, posing a threat to Tesla’s Model Y. In response to China’s competitive EV market, Tesla focuses on fast updates and model variations rather than creating entirely new vehicles.
