Tata Motors begins hydrogen truck trials on Indian roads.

Tata Motors has initiated trials for hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks in India to support the green campaign against climate change. The trial, a notable progress for sustainable cargo transport, was inaugurated by Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Pralhad Joshi to promote green energy.

The trial, lasting up to 24 months, will test 16 advanced hydrogen-powered trucks on key freight routes in India like Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi-NCR. Tata Motors won the tender funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy for the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This trial is a crucial step in evaluating the commercial feasibility of hydrogen-powered long-haul vehicles and establishing the necessary infrastructure for their smooth operation.

“Tata Motors emphasizes sustainable mobility with a pioneering initiative to align with India’s green energy goals. Gadkari flagged off the trial, highlighting hydrogen’s potential in transforming India’s transportation sector by reducing emissions and enhancing energy self-reliance. These initiatives will speed up the shift to sustainable heavy-duty trucking, steering us towards an efficient, low-carbon future.”

Joshi highlighted the importance of hydrogen as a key fuel in India’s sustainable future. The trial signifies a key step in demonstrating green hydrogen’s potential to decarbonize India’s transportation. This initiative, part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, shows commitment to innovation for energy independence and global climate goals. Tata Motors’ vehicles featured in the trial showcase a mix of Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2ICE) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) technologies, including the Tata Prima H.55S and H.28 models.

With an operational range of 300-500 km, these vehicles are designed for sustainable, cost-efficient, and high-performance transportation. Featuring the Prima cabin and advanced safety features, they enhance driver comfort and productivity while setting new safety standards in trucking. Tata Motors Executive Director Girish Wagh highlighted the company’s commitment: “Tata Motors leads India’s move towards greener, smarter, and sustainable mobility. These hydrogen truck trials mark our pioneering shift to clean, zero-emission energy for long haul transport.”
