The Tamil Nadu government passed 10 laws post a Supreme Court ruling which deemed them approved as they were reintroduced by the Assembly. The notification of these Acts in the Government Gazette signifies a major step in the state’s legislative process.
One of the revised laws renames Tamil Nadu Fisheries University to The Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University. Other acts amended relate to universities & Law schools, such as The Tamil Nadu Universities Laws Amendment Act, 2022, and The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University Amendment Act, 2022.
These new laws concerning Vice-Chancellor appointments in state universities transfer authority from the Governor-Chancellor to the government. DMK Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson praised them as groundbreaking, as they are the first Acts in India to be implemented solely based on the Supreme Court’s judgment, bypassing the need for the Governor/President’s signature.
