Shah comments as Lok Sabha approves immigration bill, saying 'India not Dharmshala'.

The Lok Sabha passed the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, regulating foreign immigration. Union Home Minister Amit Shah welcomed those contributing to India’s development but issued a stern warning to potential threats, emphasizing that the nation is not an open shelter.

The bill aims to gather current information on all foreign visitors to India for monitoring their visit purposes and stay durations closely. Understanding why and how long every foreigner stays in India is crucial, emphasizing the need for detailed visitor data.

The 2025 Immigration and Foreigners Bill suggests harsh penalties for using counterfeit documents to enter, stay, or leave India. Offenders may face imprisonment of 2 to 7 years and fines from ₹1 lakh to ₹10 lakh. The bill mandates certain establishments like hotels, universities, hospitals, and nursing homes to share foreigner details to monitor overstays.

The proposed legislation allows the government to monitor places visited by foreigners and sets rules for owners to close or regulate establishments. It imposes serious consequences on foreigners without valid travel documents, such as imprisonment for up to five years, a fine up to ₹5 lakh, or both. This bill will replace four existing laws related to foreigners entering India.
