Russian forces conducted a major aerial assault on Ukraine, deploying 367 drones and missiles, resulting in 13 fatalities, including three children in Zhytomyr. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy urges the U.S. to denounce the attacks and implement additional sanctions on Russia.
Ukraine’s air force downed 266 drones and 45 missiles, causing damage in regional centers like Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Ternopil, and Kyiv. The drone strikes injured 11 in Kyiv, with no reported fatalities. This attack had the most weapons fired in the war, though other strikes caused more casualties.
Over two days, Kyiv faced a second major assault. On Friday night, Russia launched drones and missiles at the city. In Kharkiv, drones struck three districts, causing injuries and damage. In Mykolaiv, a drone attack resulted in the death of a 77-year-old man and injuries to five others, as reported by the regional governor.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said they intercepted or destroyed 95 Ukrainian drones. Moscow Mayor Sobyanin reported 12 drones intercepted en route to the capital. The incident occurred as both nations gear up for a significant prisoner swap involving 1,000 individuals from each side.
Ukraine and its European allies advocate for a 30-day ceasefire to halt the three-year war. Trump’s refusal to impose more sanctions on Moscow for not agreeing to an immediate pause has hindered their efforts. Trump mentioned on May 8 that the US would impose “further sanctions” if Russia did not comply with an unconditional ceasefire, but he has not followed through despite his threats.
