Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is on the verge of making history as the first captain to lead in all four ICC events. Under him, India reached the finals of the 2023 World Test Championship, the 2023 ODI World Cup, and the 2024 T20 World Cup. He now has another shot at this achievement as India takes on New Zealand in the 2025 Champions Trophy final at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Rohit could equal MS Dhoni’s captaincy record in the upcoming match against New Zealand on Sunday. Winning would make him just the second worldwide to achieve ICC titles in ODI and T20I. This feat would elevate him to the ranks of iconic captains such as Clive Lloyd, Kapil Dev, Allan Border, Imran Khan, Arjuna Ranatunga, and Steve Waugh as ICC ODI champions.
Rohit, who already led India to a T20 World Cup win in 2024, seeks to add a 50-over ICC title, joining a prestigious group of five captains such as Lloyd, Ponting, Dhoni, Daren Sammy, and Pat Cummins, who have achieved this feat. His victory on Sunday could solidify his place among these successful captains.
Rohit and Virat Kohli could become the first Indian players to win four ICC titles with a victory in Sunday’s match, surpassing legends like Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Virender Sehwag, who have three titles each. Overall, 17 captains won ICC ODI trophies, eight won ICC T20 trophies, and only Dhoni holds titles in both formats.
Dhoni led India in 200 ODIs from 2007 to 2018 with 110 wins, 74 losses, five ties, and 11 no-results, boasting a 55% win rate. Meanwhile, Rohit captained in 55 ODIs, securing 41 wins, 12 losses, one tie, and one no-result, with a 74.54% win rate. As skipper, Dhoni scored 6,641 runs at 53.55 and Rohit has 2,430 runs at 51.70, with both players having multiple centuries and fifties.
