Rain may affect IPL 2025 opener at Eden Gardens

The IPL 2025 opening match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens on March 22 may be impacted by rain. Concerns arise from the Alipore Meteorological Department’s forecast of potential thunderstorms in the area.

The season opener will begin with a ceremony, but heavy rain and thunderstorms may disrupt the match. The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning, stating that thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are likely in parts of West Bengal from 20-22 March 2025 due to wind patterns and moisture from the Bay of Bengal.

The IMD identified districts like Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, East Bardhaman, North & South 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore as at risk from thunderstorms. The forecast warns of thunderstorms with 40-50km/h gusty winds, lightning strikes, hailstorms, and light to moderate rain in these areas.

The first tournament match is crucial for each team, with Knight Riders aiming to continue their title-winning form from 2024 and RCB eyeing their first IPL win. Both teams have new captains this season, with Ajinkya Rahane leading KKR and Rajat Patidar taking over for RCB after Faf du Plessis’ departure.
