The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led by Arvind Kejriwal aims for a hat-trick after victories in 2015 and 2020, facing challenges from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress in a three-way race. The BJP hasn’t led Delhi for 27 years, while Congress last held power through Sheila Dikshit from 1998 to 2013.
Key candidates in the election are Kejriwal in New Delhi against Parvesh Verma and Sandeep Dikshit, Atishi in Kalkaji vs. Alka Lamba, and Ramesh Bidhuri. Also running are Sisodia in Jangpura and Jain in Shakur Basti. The campaign, featuring debates on education, healthcare, and law enforcement, ended on February 3.
The major parties’ election manifestos include promises like free monthly grants for women, free healthcare for the elderly, and various other freebies. AAP pledges free bus rides, youth schemes, and benefits for auto-taxi drivers. Congress promises free healthcare, electricity, and monthly ration kits with rice, sugar, oil, and wheat. BJP vows stipends for Scheduled Caste students and 33% job reservation for women.
For the election, strict security measures in Delhi involve 30,000 police officers and 220 paramilitary companies. Extra police will cover sensitive booths, with QRTs to handle any issues. Special steps like drone surveillance and accessible polling stations at 733 locations are in place for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
