A recent YouGov poll revealed concerns among Americans and Western Europeans that a third global conflict could arise within the next decade, with many pointing to tensions with Russia as the potential catalyst. Respondents from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the USA expressed strong apprehension.
The poll showed that most anticipate a future conflict with nuclear weapons. 57%-73% believe casualties from a third world war would surpass those of World War II. 25%-44% even think it could result in a global catastrophe.
Most respondents anticipate their country’s participation in a potential war (Italy: 66%, UK: 89%), yet doubt their armed forces’ ability to provide defense (Italy: 16%, France: 44%). In contrast, 71% of Americans trust in their military’s effectiveness.
According to the poll, a high percentage from Western Europe and America view Russia as a likely World War instigator. Islamic terrorism is also seen as a threat, along with tensions with the US. Spain, Germany, and France see this as a significant threat to peace on the continent.
The poll highlighted a strong desire for educating younger generations about World War II and earlier conflicts. Over 82%-90% in the West and the U.S. support teaching WWII in schools. About 72%-87% find its historical lead-up still pertinent today. Around 45%-56% agree the EU played a major role in peace.
