Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a significant shift in Canada’s relationship with the United States in response to President Donald Trump imposing a 25% tariff on vehicle imports, including Canadian-made cars. Carney described this move as a “direct attack” on Canada’s economy, signaling the end of the previous close economic and security ties between the two nations.
The Canadian leader promised to retaliate against US tariffs and prioritize reducing dependency on the US. He stated that Canada would respond with strategic trade measures targeting maximum impact in the US and minimal impact domestically. The Prime Minister emphasized the complexity of trade wars, highlighting that there are no simple solutions and underscoring the intricacies of economic conflicts.
Carney confirmed that he and Trump will speak over the phone in the next few days. Carney indicated the call would happen within the next two days and emphasized the importance of Trump respecting Canada’s sovereignty, noting that it should not be too much to ask. The White House reached out to schedule the call with the Canadian PM.
Carney mentioned the possibility of his cabinet members visiting Washington, emphasizing the importance of the original Canada-US Automotive Products Agreement signed in 1965 during a press conference after a cabinet meeting. He believes teamwork between the government and business sector can help Canada sustain its car industry despite US tariffs by reimagining and retooling it.
Trump plans to impose a 25% tax on imported autos and parts, stating it’s permanent. Existing tariffs include a 25% tax on Canadian exports and on all aluminum and steel imports. New car tariffs start on April 2, with charges for vehicle importers beginning the next day as per the White House.
