NVIDIA adjusts AI chip for China to avoid US restrictions.

US-based NVIDIA to release a stripped-down H20 AI chip in China within two months due to US export curbs on the original. The move aims to maintain market presence in light of Huawei’s rise and US restrictions on China’s access to advanced semiconductor tech.

NVIDIA informed key Chinese clients, such as top cloud service providers, about the upcoming July release of the updated H20 chip. This latest version is a modified AI chip due to export license requirements after the original H20, once the most powerful AI chip in China, was discontinued following US regulations.

Due to US export restrictions, NVIDIA is establishing new technical standards for its altered chip design that differ significantly from the original H20 model, resulting in a large memory capacity reduction. Despite this, certain downstream customers might customize module configurations to adjust performance levels according to their requirements.
