New vice president anticipated by August as election process starts.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has begun the process to elect a new Vice President following Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation on July 21. In a statement on Wednesday, the ECI announced preparations for the Vice Presidential Elections, 2025, which will be conducted according to Article 324 and the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act of 1952.

The Election Commission of India will soon announce the election schedule and has begun pre-announcement activities, including preparing the Electoral College and finalizing returning officers. The Electoral College comprises all elected and nominated members of both Houses of Parliament, totaling 788 MPs—543 from the Lok Sabha and 245 from the Rajya Sabha, elected via a proportional representation system.

Several candidates are vying for the vice president position, including Harivansh Narayan Singh, Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha, who is considered a frontrunner. Additionally, reports indicate that Jammu and Kashmir L-G Manoj Sinha and Delhi L-G VK Saxena may also be contenders. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been mentioned as a possible candidate. According to NDTV, the new vice president is expected to be in office by the end of August.

To be eligible for vice president, a candidate must be an Indian citizen, at least 35 years old, qualified for Rajya Sabha, and a registered voter in India. They cannot hold profit-making positions in the Union or state government, excluding roles like president or governor. Dhankhar resigned two years into his five-year term; however, his successor will be granted a full five-year term instead of just serving the remainder.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in the midst of electing a new national president to succeed JP Nadda, with reports indicating a possible election after August 15. Dhankhar’s predecessor, M Venkaiah Naidu, a former BJP president, served in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet before his appointment to the constitutional role in 2017.
