Netflix's 'Devil May Cry' anime has all the details you need to know.

Netflix will launch an animated Devil May Cry series on April 3, showcasing Dante’s demon-slaying adventures. The original game, released by Capcom in 2001 for PlayStation 2, has become an iconic action gaming franchise. Fans eagerly anticipate this adaptation after its first look in 2023.

The Devil May Cry franchise, initially developed by Hideki Kamiya, started as a more action-focused version of Resident Evil 4 starring Tony Redgrave, a biotechnologically enhanced character. It later shifted direction to draw inspiration from Gothic architecture and Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy.

The 2001 release of the first Devil May Cry game was a huge success, setting a new standard for action gaming. Yet, the sequel, Devil May Cry 2, failed to meet expectations, disappointing fans and critics who missed the memorable characters and fair difficulty of the original.

After a stumble with Devil May Cry 2, the franchise rebounded strongly with Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, which received high praise and remains a standout in the action gaming genre. The introduction of Lady, a determined warrior on a revenge mission against Arkham, was well-received. Lady will play a significant role in the upcoming Netflix series.

The upcoming Netflix series isn’t the first Devil May Cry anime adaptation. In 2007, Madhouse Studio produced the 12-episode Devil May Cry: The Animated Series, serving as an interquel between the original game and its sequel. While informative, watching it isn’t essential for understanding the upcoming Netflix adaptation.
