A 7.7-magnitude quake struck Myanmar during Friday prayers, claiming 1,700 lives, 700 being worshippers. Widespread devastation hit buildings, airports, and mosques. In Mandalay, 60 mosques suffered damage or destruction, as mentioned by Tun Kyi, part of the Spring Revolution Myanmar Muslim Network steering committee.
It’s unclear if mosque casualties are part of the official death toll. Videos from The Irrawaddy showed mosques collapsing and people fleeing. Kyi noted that most damaged mosques were older and more susceptible to disasters.
Myanmar’s military-led government reported over 1,700 deaths from the earthquake, with more bodies found. According to spokesman Major General Zaw Min Tun, 3,400 are injured and 300+ are missing. The quake struck at midday on Friday, causing major damage in Naypyitaw and Mandalay.
Relief efforts face obstacles due to damaged infrastructure and ongoing unrest in Myanmar post-military coup. The ruling military reportedly continues attacks after the earthquake, affecting towns. The quake reached Thailand too, causing at least 18 deaths, notably at a Bangkok construction site where a high-rise collapsed during the disaster.
