Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw plans to revamp Mumbai’s suburban railway network with new-design trains for better comfort and less overcrowding. The gap between trains will be reduced from 180 to 150 seconds, then to 120 seconds, enabling more services and reducing congestion.
Vaishnaw mentioned ongoing Mumbai railway projects totaling ₹16,400 crore on Central and Western Railways. These projects will enhance the suburban rail network, accommodating around 300 new services as completion increases local train capacity by 10%, alleviating passenger congestion.
The minister highlighted intentions to add around 300km of new tracks in Mumbai to improve the suburban rail system. Maharashtra’s railway sector received a significant boost with a noteworthy ₹23,778 crore allocation in the 2025-26 Union Budget, a substantial increase from previous allotments.
The new trains will have improved ventilation and suspension for passenger comfort, with plans to introduce HVAC like Vande Bharat trains for 99.99% bacteria-free oxygen. This is part of the government’s effort to enhance the passenger experience on Mumbai’s suburban rail network.
The purchase of 238 AC rakes for suburban services in Mumbai under MUTP phase 3/3A is delayed due to political opposition. 301km of new railway lines are being laid under MUTP, with various lines at different completion stages. The Federation of Suburban Rail Passenger Associations President emphasized finishing ongoing projects before reducing train intervals.
