Manipur CM N Biren Singh resigned on Sunday amid state unrest and ethnic conflict ongoing for two years. He submitted his resignation letter to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan in Imphal amidst political developments and internal BJP party discussions.
Earlier, Singh met Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi before returning to Manipur. He then met the governor with BJP MP Sambit Patra and others. In his resignation letter, Singh appreciated the central government for its timely actions and developmental projects benefiting Manipuri citizens.
Singh’s resignation letter outlined key priorities for the central government: safeguarding Manipur’s borders, combating illegal immigration, and addressing drug-related issues. He emphasized the importance of upholding territorial integrity, cracking down on border infiltration, and enforcing the Free Movement Regime with biometric monitoring.
The resignation preempted an upcoming assembly session where the Congress aimed to table a no-confidence motion against Singh. BJP, with 32 seats in Manipur’s 60-member Assembly and supported by Naga People’s Front’s five legislators and JD(U)’s six members, maintains a majority despite losing NPP’s support.
Ethnic violence in Manipur, involving the Meitei people and Kuki-Zo community since May 2023, has resulted in 250 deaths and 60,000 displacements. Singh promised peace efforts, with the governor slated to determine the next steps during the seventh session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly starting on February 10.
