Mamata Banerjee criticizes Yogi Government for the January 29 Maha Kumbh Mela stampede in Prayagraj.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee criticized BJP for the Maha Kumbh Mela stampede on Jan 29 in Prayagraj, where 30 people died. She questioned the event planning and body recovery, referring to it as the ‘Mrityu’ Kumbh. Banerjee emphasized her respect for the Maha Kumbh and Ganga maa but highlighted the lack of organization, asking about the number of bodies found.

She highlighted the disparities in treatment for rich and poor at the event, emphasizing the VIP privileges for the wealthy, like the option to secure tents for Rs 1 lakh, while no such provisions were made for the less affluent. She cautioned about the risk of stampedes in crowded gatherings and pressed the BJP for the planning efforts they had put in place.

The opposition, led by Akhilesh Yadav of Samajwadi Party, criticized BJP for poor planning. Yadav cited a 300-kilometer traffic jam to Prayagraj as evidence of mismanagement. BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari urged Hindus to protest Mamata Banerjee’s comments. Amit Malviya of BJP IT cell suggested Banerjee feared losing the 2026 elections, drawing a comparison with Arvind Kejriwal’s challenges in Delhi.

BJP legislators protested Banerjee’s alleged appeasement politics with a sit-in at the West Bengal Assembly premises. Banerjee defended herself, denying accusations of using religion for political gain and arguing against charges of communalism by stating, “I respect all religions equally and have never played religious politics.”
